About Guitarmacist

Linden, New Jersey born Scott Engel’s musical family tree is almost as intricate as his own. His Dad, Hank, toured with the great rock and roll shows of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Playing drums for legends such as Fats Domino, Little Richard, and even Tom and Jerry (aka Simon and Garfunkel.) Scott started his taste for music early by playing drums on upside down pots and pans in the kitchen to his Dad’s old 78 RPM records. His School of Rock was a vast collection of hits which included The Teenagers, Little Richard, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry and even his Dad’s band the Rocketones (featuring Pete Saragusa, father of Tony Saragusa of NFL Football fame). After seeing his Dad play drums for the first time in a campground talent show, he was hooked, and got his first set of drums for Christmas at the age of 13.
By the time he was 16, he was filling for Dad on drums at weddings with Frankie and the Mellotones. During his middle school years, he discovered piano, in which he was self taught by playing his Grandamas Lowry organ.

As a weekend radio DJ at WRIU at the University of Rhode Island, he got a good dose of the Big 80’s, but, more importantly, got exposed to his roomate’s extensive Beatles collection! He was inspired to he taught himself how to play guitar and learned every song from AC/DC’s classic “Back in Black” album. Eventully, he learned blues guitar good enough to play in a few pickup bands in the jazz hotspot, Newport Rhode Island.

After graduation, he played bass in the Jersey Shore area, and was writing blues songs, which gave him the opportunity to meet with greats such as the Albert Collins and Johnny Winter. (although he never sold any songs, it was pretty cool meeting with those guys.)

In the early 90’s it was back to guitar. Singing and playing in a wedding band for money, and jamming with his blues band “Wild Blue Yonder” for love. By 2000, he started his own tech savy duo “Just the Two of Us” utilizing computers and vocal harmonizers to create music from all decades, and went solo as “Hit Single featuring Scott Rocks in 2006.

In 2015 he started the hard rocking cover band GOTO 11 playing the Jersey Shore circuit.

Currently Scott is playing with local area favorites, The Smokin Jackets who placed as one of the top 6 cover bands in 2017 in a poll by 105.7FM The Hawk.

His current endorsements include Sinister Guitar Picks, Killer B Custom Guitars and Bootlegger Guitars.
